Garran Holt is the professional bounty hunter carrying a live prisoner, a valuable warrant and a contract that becomes much more dangerous than its advertised route.
Holt assembles a mercenary convoy to deliver Marek Soren from Kestrel to Ardent Judicial Relay. The warrant pays for a living prisoner. He keeps control when Soren raises the price of the operation by revealing how much intelligence he carries, rather than striking him to silence the room.
The escort exposes a conflict between the apparent authority of the warrant and the people waiting at its destination. Holt’s part in the story rests on custody, professional obligation and the consequences of discovering what a lawful-looking delivery can conceal.
