Mara accepts Garran Holt’s prisoner escort contract. Her record includes civilian evacuations and a disciplinary complaint for refusing an order to abandon a damaged transport. Joel notices that she watches the prisoner rather than the money, and he and Anton approach her as prospective assault crew.
The convoy draws her into the Ardent investigation and the consequences of Project Shepherd. She remains an experienced captain with her own judgement, not an audience for House power. Later, her practical scrutiny contributes to the smaller-ship proving-ground programme and its insistence on experienced command.
